Urban League of Portland Hosts Voter Registration Celebration
Community members, volunteers and organizers gathered at Concordia University on Saturday,Oct. 11 as the Urban League of Portland hosted an afternoon of performances to "exercise the vote."
Sunshine Dixon, community organizer for the Urban League of Portland, planned the event that drew more than 80 participants. The event featured performers from local churches, schools and community groups. Volunteers from the Oregon BUS Project, a grassroots advocacy group that promotes increased civic engagement, provided a short training on voter registration. Voter registration in Oregon ended Tuesday, Oct. 14.
Also attending the event were: Lew Fredericks, who serves on the board of the Bus Project; members of the Miracles Club; Deltas Sorority; Oregon Tradeswomen Inc.; former Senator Robert Boyer; Miss Black Oregon Michelle Washington; poets Alicia Jackson and Nabeeh Mustafa; soloists Iris Holiday and Gwen Moreland; the Concordia Choral Group, led by Brian Beeghly; and more.
